A few years ago, the Publishing Triangle launched a dedicated fund for its nonfiction and poetry awards. Administered through Community Funds, Inc., an arm of the New York Community Trust, this special fund ensures a place on the literary map for these important awards--one of the few lesbian and gay literary awards that give the winner a cash prize--year after year.

Since we set up the fund in 2004, we have expanded our awards program to recognized the best in first fiction, male or female. The Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction joins our other prizes. Our nonfiction awards are named in honor of Judy Grahn and Randy Shilts. Our poetry awards recognize the singular contributions of Audre Lorde and Thom Gunn. Thanks to the generosity of interested readers, writers, booksellers, and publishing industry professionals, the Publishing Triangle has met its initial goal of endowing this fund with $25,000. (As of June 30, 2007, we have raised $26,004.) Out of that fund comes the annual $3,500 in prize money that is divided among the five worthy winners.
